Warning Signs & Symptoms of Psoriasis You Should Know About

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s system attacks its own tissue. The disease is not contagious and is mostly seen in adults, but children are still at risk as well. Although psoriasis is not catchy, it may spread to other areas of the skin if it is not treated properly. To help control this disease, it is important to learn about the signs and symptoms of psoriasis in order to know when to contact a dermatologist.

Signs and Symptoms

When psoriasis is first noticed, it is usually seen on larger joints like the knees or elbows. It often appears as red patches that are slightly raised. Another common and painful symptom of psoriasis is joint pain. The areas where the pain is most commonly felt are the elbows, knees, and wrists. Sometimes, this symptom is misinterpreted as everyday aches and pains.

There are also some less common symptoms that may occur. One of the sneaky symptoms that can also cause extreme discomfort is smooth red patches in the armpit or buttocks region. This symptom occurs when skin rubs against another area of skin which causes friction and aggravation of psoriasis.

5 Different Types of Psoriasis

Overall, there are five different types of psoriasis, which include the following.

  • Plaque Psoriasis – This is the most common type of psoriasis which appears on the scalp, elbows, and knees. Symptoms include patches of scaly skin and different sizes of plaques.
  • Guttate Psoriasis – This type of psoriasis forms tiny red bumps on the torso, legs, and arms.
  • Inverse Psoriasis – With inverse psoriasis, patches form in the armpit and buttocks region and are smooth, red, and raw.
  • Pustular Psoriasis – Pustular psoriasis consists of red, painful, and puss-filled bumps that are normally found on the hands and feet.
  • Erythrodermic Psoriasis– This type of psoriasis is severe and life-threatening. When symptoms start, the skin turns bright red and starts to look as if it is severely burnt. This is accompanied by severe pain and high fevers.
