Acne scars form from injury to the tissue, caused by the body’s inflammatory response to sebum, bacteria and dead cells in the plugged sebaceous follicle. Two types of scars exist: depressed areas and raised, thickened tissue, such as keloids.
When tissues are injured, the body rushes to repair the injured site. Among the elements of the repair kit are white blood cells and inflammatory molecules that have the task of repairing tissue and fighting infection. When their job is done, they may remain at the site of an active acne lesion for days or even weeks. In people who are susceptible to scarring, the result may be an acne scar in the form of fibrous or eroded tissue.
The only method of preventing acne scarring is to treat acne early and for as long as necessary. The more inflammation that can be prevented, the more likely it is that scars can be prevented. Any person with acne should see a Trillium Creek Dermatology skin expert to begin treatment as soon as possible.
