Sweating and body odor is a daily occurrence for all. It typically occurs when you are exercising, too warm, or nervous, anxious, and stressed. This is normal and of no concern. However, unusual changes in sweat and body odor could signal a health problem.

Sweating excessively which is known as hyperhidrosis, or little to no perspiration (anhidrosis) can be a cause for concern.

If you notice changes in your sweat and body odor, contact our skin experts at Trillium Creek Dermatology for an accurate diagnosis and treatments.

Causes of Body Odor

Sweat glands in the skin cause sweating and body odor. There are two main types of sweat glands: eccrine and apocrine glands. Eccrine glands cover most of the body and they open directly onto the surface of the skin. As the body temperature rises, these glands release fluids to cool the body. Apocrine glands are found in areas where hair occurs such as the armpits or groin. These glands release a milky fluid when stressed. The milky fluid is odorless until it combines with bacteria on the skin. Most body odor comes from the apocrine glands.

Symptoms

Body odor varies from person to person. Each person has a unique body odor. Also, some people naturally sweat more than others. If you notice any of these symptoms:

  • Sweating disrupts your daily routine
  • You notice a change in your body odor
  • You experience night sweats for no reason
  • The amount you sweat begins to change suddenly.

Contact our Trillium Creek Dermatology experts. Your urine or blood may be tested to see if the problem is caused by a medical condition like infection, diabetes, or hyperthyroidism. You will be referred to an endocrinologist if there are any abnormalities.

Treatments

Using an over-the-counter antiperspirant or deodorant can be helpful for controlling sweating and body odor. If these products don’t work, we can offer a prescription product and offer other permanent options.
