Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

Hello and welcome to this week’s blog. My name is Megan Heiby, and I’m a Registered Nurse at Trillium Creek Dermatology.

Are you tired of shaving weekly, and now with the nice weather, probably daily? Have you tried waxing or body sugaring and not a fan? Have you ever considered laser hair removal but are too afraid of either the price or the procedure? Not sure about the results or if they are long lasting? If you want to know the answers to any of these questions, stay tuned to this week’s podcast, I promise it’ll be a hair-raising good time.

An alternative to waxing, shaving and hair removal creams, permanent laser hair removal is effective at targeting stubborn hairs while leaving surrounding skin unaffected. That means no razor burn, irritated skin, soreness or any other unpleasant side effects that go along with other methods of hair removal. We use a laser to gently, painlessly, quickly and effectively remove and reduce the growth of unwanted hair. Our laser is 5 times safer and more efficient than other cosmetic hair laser removal systems. After treatment, skin is left smooth and hair-free, or with less hair.

Almost any area of the body can be treated with the laser with the exception of the eye area. The most common treatment areas for women are the chin, sideburns, upper lip, neck, arms, legs, and bikini line while the back and chest are the most common areas for men.

Two of the most common questions I hear regarding hair laser is “does it hurt and how long does it take?” Treatments are gentle, with very little discomfort and the process is fast, taking anywhere from 1-45 minutes depending on the area being treated. For example, one treatment on the upper lip only takes about a minute, while underarms may take 10 minutes and larger areas, such as the legs, could take up to 45 minutes. The number of treatments depends on the patient, as every patient is different so the number will vary. However, hair grows in cycles and to affect every hair, a minimum of 6-10 treatments every 6-8 weeks is standard for each area being treated.

Laser hair removal is fast and there is no downtime. You can resume your normal activities immediately and there are no after care instructions, however, there are a few things that patients need to do prior to treatment. It is important not to pluck or wax the area being treated for 4-6 weeks prior to treatment or during the course of treatment. You may shave leading up to treatment and we ask that you shave the treatment areas one day prior to your appointment. It is also important not to tan during the course of treatment, as hyper-pigmentation or scarring can occur.  Still looking for that summer glow though? All of our H&H Science locations located within Trillium Creek Dermatology offices have a variety of options for sunscreens to use in between treatments. While you’re there, check out our Sonic Smooth Device to gently remove the hair prior to treatments if you are looking for an alternative to shaving.

We have found that Laser Hair Removal treatment is most effective on dark colored hair, and a low efficacy rate for lighter colored hair. If you have blonde, red, white or gray hair, come to our office for a consolation with any of Registered Nurses. During this appointment, we will determine if you are a good candidate for laser hair removal, and we can discuss a treatment plan that would work best for your hair color. Also, be sure to check out the Trillium Creek Dermatology Facebook page where we run monthly promotions, many times Laser Hair Removal is featured at a discounted rate, so if you have ever thought about trying Laser Hair Removal, a month featuring this promotion would be a great way to try it!
