Nail Diseases

Nails are susceptible to many of the conditions that affect skin, and are prone to a number of unique conditions. Beautiful nails are a sign of good health; the experts at Trillium Creek have the knowledge and experience you need to achieve healthy nails.

Fungal Infections Of The Nails
Fungal infections of the nails occur most often on toenails due to ill fitting shoes and the warm, moist environment of closed footwear. These infections can cause nails to turn white or yellow, thicken, crumble or separate from the nail bed. The infection may be isolated to a single nail, or it may affect all nails. Infected nails may be uncomfortable or painful when wearing shoes, and may even cause serious physical and occupational limitations.

Treatment
Your Trillium Creek Dermatology Medical Professional will carefully examine all of your nails to determine the extent of your infection and then recommend a proper course of treatent. Treatment starts with a correct diagnosis.

Other skin/nail conditions can look like fungal infections. Our staff will test the nail to confirm the presence of fungus. If you do have a fungal infection of the nail, you may be prescribed an oral antifungal and/or a topical treatment for any bacterial or fungal infection present on the foot. These treatments will help you to prevent any recurrences of the fungal nail infection and remove any excess of fungus from the skin.

Fungal infections can be persistent and recurrent. Some treatment options for fungal infections may be undesirable or contra-indicated for your health. Your Trillium Creek Medical Professional will advise you about the ramifications of all your treatment options.

CLEARTOE™: Advanced New Nail Fungus Treatment Now Available at Trillium Creek
ClearToe™ is available as an option for patients experiencing little success with other available treatments. ClearToe™ technology heats the nail and the area around it with laser energy to kill the fungus. This leads to new growth of clear, healthy nails. ClearToe™ is a safe and comfortable treatment, and typically only takes 15-20 minutes for all ten toes.

All toes that are involved with infections should be treated at the same time. Toenails grow very slowly and it may take several months to see the new growth of the healthy nail to appear. Two treatments, one month apart, are recommended to give a high chance of permanently clearing the fungal infection. If at six months the fungal infection is still present, a re-treatment may be needed and more care has to be directed at preventing a re-infection with fungus from the shoes or the skin on the feet.

BEFOREAFTER

Results two months after ClearToe™ treatment. Your nail will continue to clear. It can take up to nine months for the full toenail to regrow clear of fungus.

Ingrown Nails
Ingrown nails occur most commonly on the big toes, where pressure from ill fitting shoes causes the toenail to grow inward. The area where the nail pierces the skin can become infected and extremely painful.

Treatment
Professional treatment of an ingrown nail can speed healing and reduce recurrence. Your Trillium Creek Dermatology Medical Professional can quickly and effectively trim away the nail and surrounding skin, and provide antibiotics if the area has become infected.

Other Diseases Of The Nails
A wide range of other diseases can affect the nails, including contact dermatitis (allergy to nail hardener or adhesive), bacterial infection, psoriasis, eczema, trauma and chronic picking or biting. Once the nail is damaged or separates from the nail bed, a secondary infection is common, complicating the condition.

Treatment
Many unique nail diseases can look similar to the untrained eye. Trust the specialists at Trillium Creek to identify your specific condition and start you on an effective course of treatment.
