Why Choose Homeopathy?

Leonard Torok, M.D. discusses the advantages and disadvantages of choosing a homeopathic approach for your treatment.

The purpose of this presentation is to provide our patients with information to help them compare the advantages and disadvantages between the traditional allopathic approach and the homeopathic approach to treating skin diseases or symptoms.

I will mostly assume that you already are aware of the approach of traditional Western medicine. If this is not the case, feel free to ask one of our providers about the advantages and disadvantages of a pharmaceutical-based approach to treating your skin condition.

The information in this video will cover the advantages and disadvantages of utilizing a homeopathic approach for those six skin complaints we have initially chosen to treat with homeopathic remedies. We will be offering homeopathic treatment for a select group of both acute and chronic skin conditions.

Advantages Of Homeopathic Remedies
•	One advantage of homeopathic remedies is their gentle action and safety even though they are quite powerful in removing symptoms. Because of their long track record of safety, the FDA allows the majority of homeopathic remedies to be sold over the counter without a prescription.
•	Homeopathic remedies are entirely safe for all patients and can even be used both in small infants and pregnant women.
•	Homeopathic remedies are compatible with other traditional therapies and do not preclude the use of both at the same time.
•	Homeopathic remedies are also quite inexpensive medications.
•	Another advantage to using the homeopathic approach to treat your skin symptoms is the likelihood of achieving a permanent cure for your skin condition. This cure would include where the symptoms no longer are present and treatment is no longer required. This can be seen in both acute and chronic skin conditions.

For example we will offer our patients a cold sore remedy kit that contains the most common remedies for the three stages of cold sores. Apis mel is indicated at the first suggestion of a cold sore where there is a stinging or an uncomfortable sensation in the site of the cold sore but not yet any breakout. Taking apis at this stage may prevent the cold sore from appearing. The second stage of the cold sore is when small vesicles have appeared on the skin and are still intact and clear. At this stage, rhus tox may speed the healing of the cold sore and prevent it from going to the ulcerated stage. If the treatment is started at a later point, where ulceration is present, the remedy mezereum will help speed the healing of the skin and ending the patient’s symptoms. The advantage of using remedies for controlling the symptoms of cold sores is that it is likely that the cold sores will appear less frequently following treatment with the homeopathic remedies.

Treating Acute Skin Problems
We expect that our initial success rate in treating acute conditions will be about 75% in finding the correct remedy for your complaint. As further experience with the homeopathic approach is gained, our success rate should improve but some cases will remain where the correct matching remedy cannot be found.

Treating Chronic Skin Diseases
In treating chronic skin diseases, the advantages of treating acute skin diseases apply with a few extra considerations.

Recovery from a chronic skin disease will be gradual and gentle under the homeopathic system. The remedies offer the potential for a curative healing process versus a suppressive process. The length of time to cure the patient’s disease will be proportional to the length of time the disease has existed. In stubborn or long standing cases the healing process can take many months.

Our expectation is that 50% of chronic skin diseases should be permanently curable where ongoing treatment is not needed after all the presenting complaints have been removed. We expect that an additional 25% of patients with chronic skin diseases will have their symptoms controlled with the homeopathic remedy and will require ongoing treatment to maintain this relief. When the correct homeopathic remedy is found for a patient’s symptoms and the symptoms subside, the need for previous suppressive treatments should also be eliminated. The goal, when possible, is to eliminate any treatment being necessary and remove the patient’s exposure to the possibility of side effects from drugs. With further experience, our percentages of successful responses should improve.

Holistic Health Benefits
As an additional advantage, holistic health benefits are commonly seen during homeopathic treatment. In addition to achieving relief of the skin symptoms, other concurrent symptoms in other parts of the body or its functions will also resolve. For example, common complaints that are often seen to improve under homeopathic treatment of skin complaints are asthma, insomnia, irritable bowel syndrome, arthritis or depression.

The major disadvantage of taking a homeopathic approach to treatment occurs when the correct remedy for your individual complaint cannot be found. In this case, there will be no effect from the remedy (either healing or any side effects).
